I see, it's a bug in GNU Classpath. Fixing the bug is far beyond my ability, so I have to let it go at the moment.

GNU Classpath is an implementation of the Java API (i.e. it provides
implementations for the classes from the java.* and javax.* packages,
among others).

Other implementations of the Java API are the OpenJDK class libraries
(that's what the Java on your Ubuntu uses) and the Apache Harmony class
libraries (which have been discontinued).

GNU Classpath is a dependency of the Jikes RVM and is downloaded during
the build process. You do not need to install it.

The problem is not caused by anything you have done (or not done). The
problem is caused by a bug in GNU Classpath. To fix this problem, you
would have to fix the bug in GNU Classpath by contributing a patch to
the GNU Classpath project.
