If you haven't found a workaround yet, you can try reducing or increasing the heap size. IIRC somebody posted during a discussion about virtual memory problems in the Jikes RVM that this can help. I've never run into these problems so I can't say if that's the case.

Have you tested on hg tip? The only issues that were fixed since 3.1.3 and that *might* be related are RVM-1025 (Nursery is created for non-generational garbage collectors) and RVM-1026 (Address conflict caused by overlapping of normal spaces with nursery).
