IIRC there aren't any expensive operations in JMX from Jikes RVM itself to MMTk. However, I haven't looked at the performance for JMX and currently don't plan to. If you want to make some improvements there, we'd be happy to review your patches.

You could also switch to another method of monitoring. There are probably several workable approaches, depending on what you need. Someone else on this list can probably help you with that.
