Java VM Memory Statistics question?

We have been having a slowdown in page loading and refresh.  I noticed while checking the memory that the Total memory is down from 344Mbts to 12mbts free.  Is this a problem?  What is a way to free some up?

Total Memory 	344 MB
  Free Memory 	12 MB
  Used Memory 	332 MB
  Total PermGen Memory 	256 MB
  Free PermGen Memory 	156 MB
  Used PermGen Memory 	99 MB
