Sorry, I was in a very "let me google that for you" mood yesterday, due to being dragged into three separate meetings to answer questions that people could have had an answer for weeks ago if they had bothered to type their questions into the search. I'm much happier with "I read the doc, but need help because it doesn't quite answer my question" type stuff, because at least they're trying!

>Active Directory contains usernames, passwords and other details so connecting JIRA to Microsoft Active Directory will enable all the users in the Active Directory to log in to JIRA?
No. Sort of.

It means that when Jira needs info about a user, instead of it looking at it's own internal database, it says "OI, LDAP, tell me about this person". The most important details it will fetch are the user and the *groups* they belong to. The Groups are important because Jira lets people log in if they are in a particular group. The default is "jira-users".

So, connecting Jira to AD means that "all the users in the AD, who are in the group jira-users, can log into Jira". Last place I worked where it was hooked to AD had about 15,000 AD users, of which about 900 were in Jira-users.

Check admin -> Global permissions in Jira to see which group(s) can log into Jira.

>If I go to user browser will I see all the users that are allowed to log in to JIRA from the Active Directory?
Yes, given the answer above.

>When I test the settings it says "Connection test successful." but when I try to Synchronise it says "Synchronisation failed. See server logs for details.". What seems to be the problem?
No idea, it does tell you to read the logs... have a look at both sides, Jira and AD and see what they say. If it's not obvious from them, then post the error messages and we'll have another look!
