I'd use Ubuntu Server - it'll work fine on desktop, but the server edition of Ubuntu is better for servers because it installs less user-frontend junk (that servers don't need) and asks you about installing other services you might find useful Version - with Ubuntu, the answer to that is "whatever works best for you". If you're new to Ubuntu, then the rule is "use the latest LTS release". That's currently 11.04.
