That's a very good point. The "factory" is there for configuring the plugin, not for running it, so you won't have a transition name in transitionVars, because you're not in a transition (you won't even have transitionVars available because you're not in the workflow) Could you take a step back and describe what you are trying to do in a non-technical way? Explain what the user will experience, not the technical side of it.
