Working with Permission Schemas

Im using JIRA 4.3.3 Standalone Starter License configuration.

Ok, so Ive read through the forums and online docs, ([this|http://forums.atlassian.com/thread.jspa?messageID=257297525&#257297525] was particularly helpful, but Im still having problems. 

What I want to do:
* secure one project for one group to be a basic user (add issues and comments)
* not see any other projects
* only see data on their system dashboard that pertains to their one project

What Ive done:

# created a group (new-group)
# created a project role (New Project Role) and added the new group as the default members
# created a new permission schema (New Permissions Schema) that is a copy of the default permission schema
# replaced all instance Project Role(jira-users)  with Project Roles(new-group) in the permissions
# added (new-group) to Global Permissions as JIRA User, Create Shared Objects and Bulk Change
# Assigned the desired project to use New Permissions Schema

The problem is when the users of new-group login, they arent able to create an issue and they dont see any issues or projects. 

What am I missing?
