Caching Static Items

I am considering adding a LRU cache for items which come from the StaticResourceLoader.  Currently I recommend to anyone who asks that you serve your images from another host, preferably a fast one running something like Apache.  However, since I have cases where I can't do that and I have noticed performance degredation when loading image files over and over again, I am leaning towards putting a cache in place to decrease request time, sacrificing memory instead.  Any thoughts on this?
