Well, I guess my problem is that they *both* change now.   But with  
the right-aligned part it doesn't really matter that much, because  
it's not visually that strong.

How about if we just had a tab -bar, and then put all the other stuff  
in the dropdown?

Then the More... menu would contain something like

* Log in / Log out (we should probably put the login/logout also  
under the G*day greeting, 'cos that's a logical place)
* Preferences
* Create new group

* Front Page
* Any other page that the admin wants, grabbed off a list from somewhere

I think that the stuff that you need often should be easily  
available, but things like "login/logout" you don't really do that  
often.
