Here's a pretty typical website that I believe is based on a wiki
(or could be), which has the kind of login/user area I'd advocate
for us: it's simple, in an easily-noticed part but unobtrusive of
the page, and it's what users have probably come to expect:

    http://texture.co.nz/blogs/events/

And as I mentioned previously, a very large number of web sites
have a top banner area (it's certainly what I've been asked to do
in each of the wikis I've developed) so I would be moving anything
at the top of the page to a left and/or right sidebar.
