If you're experiencing a bug in screen painting, which it seems from
your description you might be, then you should make sure you're
running the most up-to-date version of your graphics drivers.

There have been an ongoing problems for Java GUIs that are actually
rooted in video drivers but which effecting only (or seemingly only)
Java programs.
