I don't know if the old versions had appropriate documentation for this, but latest code does, under the docs/dev directory. Basically you can use NB6 for editing the code, but you have to build against NB5.5. There is an issue filed to upgrade JSwat to the latest release of NetBeans, which will be a significant undertaking.
