That's a great platform for a "JXTA appliance". What sort of power requirements do they need? What about smaller footprint devices that could run on a battery such as motes, cell phones, GPS devices, RFID tag readers? These could be deployed along with the even smaller devices for aggregation, provisioning, gateway, etc. One example would be a mesh network of sensor devices (low power) that know the location of other sensors relative to their own location. A GPS device, which has more power requirements, but you only need one, can be hooked into that network to determine the "real world" locations of these devices. A network of these GPS systems can then feed the backbone to control centers, other GPS stations, etc. for situational awareness applications. The security and organization of these networks could be handled by JXTA. Another would be motes that are RFID tag readers. These could be used to reduce the cost of deploying tag readers in every location where tags are read. Instead, you deploy low cost battery powered motes that feed into tag readers that aggregate the data read from the motes.
