The nightly (and release) JNLPs:

  http://download.jxta.org/build/nightly

have worked from some time on my *nix boxes and our home mac. Others have launched on
Win/* as well.

Not sure what problem you ran into.

If you tried launching the "platform-ext.jnlp" file directly it is not a "main," ie
launchable jnlp but is instead an extension.

Shell and MyJXTA are launchable JNLP apps.
