Mini-track is approaching. This is the final call for papers.

We look forward to a great conference. This is my third year of 
involvement. The conference is always very well attended, the papers 
excellent and the venue speaks for itself.

            Peer-to-Peer Infrastructures and Applications
                  in the Software Technology Track
                    at the Thirty-ninth Annual
           HAWAI'I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON System Sciences
                         January 4 - 7, 2006

The purpose of this one-day mini-track is to provide a forum for 
researchers and
practitioners to discuss the software technology issues related to 
peer-to-peer
(P2P) computing and its evolving paradigm. P2P is an emerging, 21st 
century
technology whose applications from the onset have exhibited both its 
power and
diversity. While file sharing bootstrapped the application space, we 
now see P2P
based chat rooms; global VoIP networks; computing grids; collaborative 
software
design, development and debugging; sensor networks; and distributed 
disk storage
and Multi-Agent Systems to give us a short list of examples. These 
applications
more often than not run on non-interoperable infrastructures. 
Peer-to-Peer is in
dire need of a unifying, underlying set of communication protocols if 
it is to
have the same impact on the Internet as the IP stack did in the 1980’s. 
Almost
any device with an RF signal can connect to the Internet, and become a 
Peer Node.
While the research branch of the IETF, the Internet Research Task Force 
(IRTF),
has a Research Group on P2P with the goal of proposing P2P protocols 
appropriate
for the IETF to standardize for the Internet, research problems on the 
fundamental
behavior of Peer Nodes abound. As a consequence, the research community 
has taken
it upon itself to put in place a solid theoretical foundation of P2P 
computing by
addressing issues like routing, trust, security, content distribution, 
P2P platform
performance, lookup, search, computational grids based on P2P 
platforms, etc.

The above efforts are yielding a common paradigm for Peer-to-Peer 
computing. It is
a model characterized by an increasing decentralization with the 
additional reliance
on deterministic super-peers for high performing production networks 
that must yield
a responsive user experience. The latter is one of the absolute 
requirements if P2P
is to attract customers to generate revenue growth. The other is 
security: P2P
networks must protect the users’ privacy as well as artists’ copyright. 
These issues
pose a rich and new problem space for distributed computing research 
because
Peer-Nodes may be autonomous and, if desired, anonymous; and they play 
the roles of
both clients and servers. It necessitates a natural evolution or 
mapping of the
Internet protocols that then must also be characterized in view of 
these new
requirements.

While the industry is hard at work trying to impose tomorrow’s “legacy 
architectures”
by the means of so called Web Services, Peer-to-Peer computing goes one 
step further
and postulates that although there will always be a need for 
centralization in the
client-server sense, the general model that should prevail is again one 
where roles
are not clear cut but dynamic. Peers are thus actors that appear and 
disappear
dynamically, hence pushing back and forth the edges of the network, 
potentially
endorsing all possible roles at any point in time. In this context, 
hard-wired
centralized services are only one among many interaction patterns that 
can be
achieved in Peer-to-Peer architectures that more closely capture the 
features of a
real world, distributed computing eco-system.

Similarly, the Semantic Web initiative by the W3C also builds on this 
departure from
centralized architectures and places the debate at the level of 
ontologies and
semantics. We may expect web services to occur and interoperate in 
Peer-to-Peer
architectures. This will require formal descriptions of the semantics 
of the services
they provide, as well as the use of Peer-to-Peer paradigms in order to 
establish
agreements on commonly used ontologies.

Given the above context, contributions of interest will be those that 
describe novel
business interactions and user coordination models, applications 
supporting the
peer-to-peer paradigm, novel approaches to user interfaces for P2P 
applications, and
research that both pushes the frontiers of the applications, 
infrastructures and
protocols as well as verifies their limits with respect to performance 
and scalability.
Thus we envisage an interdisciplinary forum that brings together 
participants with
technology backgrounds, practitioners from industry, members of open 
source communities,
and researchers to discuss and evaluate the technology aspect as well 
as the interplay
between technological capabilities and new emerging forms of commercial 
electronic
interaction. Topics related to the emerging P2P paradigm include, but 
are not limited
to, the following:

- P2P system architectures and protocols
- P2P overlay networks
- Security
- Trust and reputation
- Mobile objects (Agents)
- Wireless infrastructures that are both carrier based and ad-hoc
- Semantic and discovery services
- Rights and policy languages
- Digital rights management and policy management (DRM/DPM)
- Self-organizing information systems
- Multi-agent systems
- Electronic communities and marketplaces
- Monitoring, metering and auditing
- Digital asset management and trading
- User Interface Design for P2P Applications

Abstracts - Authors may contact Minitrack Chairs for guidance and 
indication of
appropriate content at anytime.

June 15 - Authors submit full papers to the Peer Review System, 
following Author
Instructions found on the HICSS web site (www.hicss.hawaii.edu). All 
papers will
be submitted in double column publication format and limited to 10 
pages including
diagrams and references. Papers undergo a double-blind review.

August 15 - Acceptance/Rejection notices are sent to Authors via the 
Peer Review System.

September 15 - Authors submit Final Version of papers following 
submission
instructions on the Peer Review System web site. At least one author of 
each paper must
register by this date with specific plans to attend the conference to 
present the paper.
Early Registration fee $525 applies.

October 2 - General Registration fee $575 applies until December 10.

December 10 - Deadline to guarantee your hotel room reservation at 
conference rate.
- Deadline to receive conference registration refund.
- Late registration fee $675 applies.


INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SUBMISSION
• HICSS papers must contain original material not previously published, 
nor currently
   submitted elsewhere.

• Consult the conference website (www.hicss.hawaii.edu) for the listing 
and description
   of Minitracks for HICSS-39.

• (optional) Contact the Minitrack Chair(s) by email for guidance and 
verification of
   appropriate content.

• Do not submit the manuscript to more than one Minitrack Chair. If 
unsure of which
   Minitrack is appropriate, submit abstract to the Track Chair for 
guidance.

• HICSS will conduct double-blind reviews of each submitted paper.

• Submit full paper according to detailed instructions found on the 
Peer Review System
   website.
