I am also a newbee and had a hard time getting the discovery of my advertisements work. I then took a look at the http://jxtanetmap.jxta.org/ project source code and copied the configuration from this project. I also removed the usage of a group. Now my client has no problems finding the pipe advertisement. Refer also to my mail: http://www.jxta.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=user&msgNo=7242 The main problem I see is the question of Jxta configuration. I have searched the jxta wiki, the jxta mailing list and jxta books but could not find material on how the configuration affects the system. As you state I also find it very difficult to understand "do I have to create my own group? If I do then do I have to have a rendezvous running in my group? things like that..". I find that Jxta has a wonderful API and is a well designed framework. But all developers I know have dismissed using it because they did not find enough information on HOW TO and had given it up after some hours of trial and error.
