Lengthy query timing out

I have a model that is using the jdbc-query service. It can run long sometimes, and my users simply get the timeout exception. Can i prevent this without increasing the timeout to a huge number? Forking something maybe? That brings me to a question of the Fork util model: How do you get the response from the fork to the client?
