Running java with '-XX:-UseSpinning' fixed the problem for Matthew. If somebody else sees this problem on SMP, then please try this switch and send me a mail. (I can't reproduce the problem on my SMP machines so far.) People with uniprocessor machines won't see this problem, spinning is only enabled on multiprocessor machines.
