Broken Pipe on Linux tends to be due to one end of the socket closing down before the other end expects (usually you are trying to write a bit more to the socket and it has closed) Could there be something with the SMTP protocol that is not being handled correctly? Have sniffed the traffic yet to watch the exchange?
