As far as I know Xerces is a large, fat, slow pig.
Depending on the complexity for the task at hand and how fast/lowmem you want to 
get things to run, you might want to hook up with nanoxml 
(http://nanoxml.cyberelf.be/) or a plain SAX parser instead.
