  As an addon and background reading, Mitchel Baker,
mozilla.org's Chief Lizard Wrangler, has posted an

  I guess another reason why Apple choose KHTML over
Gecko for Safari is that it's free of XUL and thus
less threatening to their own Apple OS X-only APIs
(Quartz, Coca, and so on).
