I agree that classic Mozilla XUL falls short for web forms compared to "classic" HTML forms. Luxor tries to add the best ideas of W3C XForms - also billed as the next-gen Web Forms upcoming in XHTML 2.0 - to XUL. I've already briefly started work on it. You might wonna check out the ramses-forms module in the CVS repository for some embrionic examples.
