The problem is due to a bug in XML classes, I guess.
If you replace the XML classes with the latest Xerces and Xalan then
the problem should be gone on JDK 1.4.x, as reported by Bianca Thelen
on mx4j-user.
Use the endorsed mechanism to replace the XML classes.
