Initial Comment:
The current writeResponse(..) method in the DefaultProcessor class traverses the response document nodes twice and unnecessarily creates a ByteArrayOutputStream and ByteArray when the logger level is not DEBUG.

Attached is a patch than can be applied to the mx4j directory under svn trunk that changes the code to only do processing related to debug tracing only if the logger level is set to DEBUG.
