Well, the 1.x implementation is an "external" heartbeat, that is it uses JRMPAdaptor to connect to the server side and to ping it. For JSR 160 I needed an "internal" one, that is it's JSR 160 that uses the heartbeat. Would be cool to convert it to JSR 160, but I'm not sure if Michael Gorelik is interested or still active in this list... Sure we need to clean several things for 2.0.
