NetBeans Weekly News, a newsletter for the NetBeans community Issue #53 - February 18, 2002 URL: <http://www.netbeans.org/newsletter/2002-02-18.html> Interested in becoming a newsletter editor ? We're always looking for editors to help out - contact [email protected] Please send news contributions to [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------- At the begining of release cycle ... -------------------------------------- * Netbeans 3.3.1 was released a few weeks ago and we are in the planning phase again. If you are interested in 3.4 (4.0) plans you can view feature lists for modules. Some nice feature lists are: http://core.netbeans.org/plans/index.html http://projects.netbeans.org/plans/features.html http://java.netbeans.org/plans/features.html http://xml.netbeans.org/plans/features.html http://ui.netbeans.org/plans/features.html * Netbeans's motto is "Quality Is a Feature!", that's why QA launched the Q-builds program more than half year ago. After the stabilazation phase of 3.3.1, Q-builds are back again and help us to keep Netbeans in good shape. I am pretty sure everybody knows what the Q-builds program is, but ... Q-builds Program http://qa.netbeans.org/processes/q-builds-program.html Q-report for build #200202150100 http://qa.netbeans.org/q-builds/Q-build-report-200202150100.html Discussions ---------------- * Yarda finished reworking of the Looks API in openidex/looks module and it started another round of discussion about looks. See the following topics: [nbdev] Another Look question http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=257884&listName=nbdev Re: [nbdev] ProxyLook http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=258592&listName=nbdev Re: [nbdev] Looks & Badging http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=259273&listName=nbdev Re: [nbdev] Why Look works only against a Node ? http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=259551&listName=nbdev [nbdev] Looks patch: please review. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=262088&listName=nbdev * Performance is still our big goal for 3.4 and memory profiling is one of methods developers can use to improve performance of IDE. Petr Nejedly wrote a guide which describes usage of HAT/hprof tool for that task. See his "How to use HAT on NetBeans" article on http://performance.netbeans.org/articles/hat-howto/index.html * It seems like Yarda is able to speed up the IDE startup time by persisting lookup cache between IDE sessions. Implementation isn't trivial and it raised the question of using Lookup vs. JNDI for well-addressable non-shared stuff, read more on Re: [nbdev] Possible 5% startup time improvement http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=260573&listName=nbdev * Couple of weeks ago Lea Anthony started a discussion about the name we use for "GUI Editing" workspace . This originally very simple question provoked people to thing about the workpsaces concept at all. Some people find workpsaces useful, some don't like them mainly due to slow switching. Can we expect solutions (even radical) or will this die in the noise of nbui@ alias like many other things? Read the thread [nbui] "GUI Editing" on http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=219634&listName=nbui http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=259059&listName=nbui --------------------------------------------------------------------- This issue of NetBeans Weekly News was brought to you by Vita Stejskal.
