------------------------------------------------------------------- NetBeans Weekly News, a newsletter for the NetBeans community Issue #105 - March 3, 2003 URL: http://www.netbeans.org/newsletter/2003-03-03.html Interested in becoming a newsletter editor? We're always looking for editors to help out - contact [email protected] Please send news contributions to [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------- * TEGAL - NetBeans 3.5 release Trung became the release coordinator for NetBeans 3.5 release. We all wish him good luck! http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=472926&listName=nbdiscuss http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=472961&listName=nbdiscuss Branch "release35" created on Friday (February 28th). http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474369&listName=nbdev http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=475596&listName=nbdev Read the rules for commits into "release35" branch. See also the next mails in the thread explaining details (we are not in high resistance mode yet, no code review required, though just fixing P1/P2, the rules apply only on code changes, etc). http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=475395&listName=nbdev * Q build The Q-build candidate (#200302260100) have not passed the quality criteria this week. See the report. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=473920&listName=nbdev http://qa.netbeans.org/q-builds/Q-build-report-200302260100.html * nbusers A long running thread about NetBeans performance, charging whatever from video card drivers (read this thread if you have problems with ATI cards) to bad architecture of modules. However, there are several remarks about promising improvements in coming NetBeans 3.5. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=471598&listName=nbusers Another heated thread that does not seem to end soon, this time about the NetBeans UI. Just the subject: Netbeans look and feel is extremely inferior !!! http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474056&listName=nbusers People seem to have enough mails like in the two threads above. This one also started like "NetBeans is ... , look at competition it is great", but turned over quickly to a serie of recommendations how one could help rather than complain all the time. So don't believe that "Sun has spoilt their own image with Netbeans, and it is too late now". http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474666&listName=nbusers After some time, there are (once again) three requests for two-way GUI builder (or at least for a capability to import forms from .java code). This seems to be significant barrier for people leaving JBuilder. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=473006&listName=nbusers http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=472443&listName=nbusers http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474540&listName=nbusers Luckily, no new thread about refactoring started, the only attempt was choked immediately ;-). http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474360&listName=nbusers * nbdev Some time ago, we asked people for testing -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC switch for performance and reliability (suspecting it for causing severe performance problems, besides the improvements). See the summary done by Trung. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=476306&listName=nbdev Tim run into a not very nice practice in NetBeans code: lots of nodes are abusing firePropertyChange (fire null names, or changes of properties they don't have). Read "Property names and property sheet and firing changes?" http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=473015&listName=nbdev http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=31553 Another property change firing problem, now in performance and scalability area. How to update displayed names of all nodes in explorer effectively? http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=473987&listName=nbdev A discussion about debug builds vs. optimized builds. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=471971&listName=nbdev Yarda suggested to improve usability of AutoUpdate. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=476242&listName=nbdev I18N: Maxym reminds us we (NetBeans developers) have a new easy way for setting text with mnemonics to labels and buttons - just specifying it by '&' character inside the text string. This makes the mnemonic definition easier and also better localizable. See a discussion about supporting this in the form editor. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474134&listName=nbdev * openide-dev Curious about why are actions performed in other than AWT thread? http://openide.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=472464&listName=dev Problems with focus in TopComponent? Try the following thread. http://openide.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=474513&listName=dev Another attempt to build something on top of the form designer component from the form editor. Does not seem to be trivial, but could be possible. http://openide.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=470336&listName=dev --------------------------------------------------------------------- This issue of NetBeans Weekly News was brought to you by Tomas Pavek.
