Sprout, Issue 12 (June 2003)

Welcome to the twelfth issue of Sprout, NetBeans monthly newsletter.

Great news to announce this month so let's get started. NetBeans IDE 3.5 and J2SE 1.4.2 are now available as a co-bundle. Read where you can get the download.

At the time Sprout was being written our largest number of downloads of NetBeans IDE 3.5 with 21,258 was windows and this number was in the first 16 days after release. More stats to follow next month.

An RSS feed of recent NetBeans news is now available. If you're new to RSS, check out the basic RSS intro page .

JavaOne has come and gone leaving fond memories yet again for everyone involved. Get the lowdown on the events that took place in this issue Sprout.

Module Catalogue

TurboM2 - TurboM2 is a second-generation implementation of the JSP Model 2 web application architecture. It builds on the prior art of frameworks such as Struts, WebMacro and Virtuas Solutions' Web Application Model (WAM) to present a highly configurable and modularized tool that supports the development of both web applications and web services using J2EE. TurboM2 users (that is, developers who build web applications and services) will use the TurboM2 framework to integrate business assets with webbased user interfaces. With TurboM2, business assets may be used as-i!

s, with no modification. The user interface components (JSP's, HTML, images, etc.) are bundled with the framework, configuration information, and user extensions for deployment in the J2EE servlet container.

Board Election Results

The election results are in and this is your new governance board.

Danese Cooper has been working with NetBeans and supporting it in many different ways since the very beginning of NetBeans as an opensource project. We are quite excited to have her on the board, which will help us to even more leverage the experise she gained working with surprisingly hugh number of opensource projects.

Maxym Mykhalchuk is 23 years old, living in Ukraine. 3 years professional programming experience: AI, Database design, I18N. Currently Lead Ingeneer at SPA Infomet (www.orbita.dp.ua ), which provides GIS solutions for weather forecasting & weather monitoring. NetBeans interests: I18N/L10N, Russian translation of IDE, Marketing in Russian community.

Tor Norbye ( http://www.norbye.org/tor ), works for Sun Microsystems, in California. Has in the past written a couple of commercial modules on top of NetBeans for Sun's tools products. Currently working on a "secret" Sun product yet to be announced. NetBeans involvement these days limited to the tasklist module project in his spare time; http://tasklist.netbeans.org .

At JavaOne, Tor kept his composure under pressure and rebuilt his demo on the fly after it had failed during a keynote speech. Impressive Tor!

LinuxWorld Conference & Expo one of the world's leading gathering places for anyone and everyone interested in Linux and other open source technologies. The Expo is being held at the Moscone Convention Center , San Francisco, California.

The Lowdown From JavaOne 2003

This year JavaOne seemed not only to have the hype but also the creme filling in the bold theme, Java Everywhere. The estimated attendance was around 12,000, over 200 technical sessions and 175 Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) provided the developer community a plethora of options. This year seemed to attract the right people.

Backed by the statistical facts and demos it is plain to see that Java is truly in a position to take on the world. To aid in Java's progression there are two new websites to take advantage of:

- java.net (NetBeans is a federated member), which is a developer community hosting blogs, wikis, code databases and forums

- java.com , a consumer-focused effort where you can find downloadable games, applications an the most recent JRE for windows.

By the way, have you noticed the new Java logo ?

Next: What is all the rave about Rave ?
Sun announced a new programming tool to provide experienced developers with an environment that allows them to deal with day-to-day tasks without spending too much time with the backend. Rave is based upon the NetBeans Platform because of its flexibility and extensibility which allows the creation of an application that targets a completely different crowd.

NetBeans at JavaOne

At NetBeans BOFs we were giving away two types of T-shirts, a blue with blurred text with the theme designed for speed and also red shirts with a cool version of the NetBeans cube. The graphics will be made available on netbeans.org for you viewing pleasure soon. Also to be available soon is our other give-away item which was a mini CD containing NetBeans IDE 3.5 with a great looking cube graphic on a white background. This will be made available to the community and people who wish to burn their own NetBeans disc.

BOFs

Building Performance Swing Applications was the first BOF by NetBeans at JavaOne 2003 and it was a success. Courtesy of Petr Nejedly and Trung Duc Tran, their presentation held the attention of 75 people throughout the 50 minute session. With the BOF scheduled to begin at 9:30PM this was a pleasing turnout which stands side-by-side with the way they held their composure while answering the tough questions the audience sent forth. At the end of the session we gave out red and blue NetBeans t-shirts to the faithful who braved this evening adventure.

Writing Extensions for the NetBeans Software IDE was the last BOF given by the NetBeans team and presented by Jesse Glick.

A special thank you goes out to the NetBeans fans who stopped by at JavaOne to ask questions or just to chat. We look forward to seeing all of you there again next year. J2SE v 1.4.2 with NetBeans IDE v 3.5 Co-bundle

The following notes pertain to the software co-bundle of the Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition (Java 2 SDK), v. 1.4.2 and NetBeans IDE 3.5. This co-bundle is available for download from the Java Software web site .

- Release notes for NetBeans IDE 3.5 are available in a README file , which is available on the NetBeans project website.

Version 1.4.2 builds upon Java technology's cross-platform support and robust security model with new features and functionality, enhanced performance and scalability, and improved reliability and serviceability.
