Welcome to the thirteenth issue of Sprout, the NetBeans monthly newsletter.

The NetBeans community would like to welcome all of the Sun ONE Studio CE members who are here to give NetBeans a shot. Welcome.

Top news in this issue is the release of the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Japanese Edition. This is an event to celebrate.

In The Press we revisit the Usability Study that took place in Prague and hear the User Centered Software Design Groups' recommendations.

NetBeans is sending out a rally cry to bring forth volunteers to help with the new Japanese and Chinese mailing lists. Knowledge of either language would be useful. Get in touch with the [email protected] people.

Just when you thought it was safe, the NetBeans team is back on the road for the SunNetwork Conference. Get the details.

Last but by no means least our friends at RefactorIT have released RefactorIT 1.3.2. Changes include: Bug fixes and improvements of the Minimize Access, Move Type and Move member refactorings; Support for updating NetBeans plugin via NetBeans Update center; and other General bug fixes and improvements.

The NetBeans 3.5.1 Release: Japanese Edition & English Font Fix

The NetBeans.org open source project announced the availability of the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 and the first official NetBeans release in the Japanese language.

Currently the NetBeans IDE is available in English, Japanese, French, Russian and soon the first official Chinese Edition. The localizations are all part of a continual effort by the NetBeans community to broaden it's user base on a global level. Local language mailing lists are also provided to ease communications and support between users.

The 3.5.1 English language release contains bug fixes that improve the IDE's handling of text when the default font size is increased. These fixes were necessary to create a Chinese localization, since the Chinese characters require a larger font size to be readable. The Chinese localization should be available in a few weeks time.

If you are already using the NetBeans IDE 3.5 and the font size issues do not affect you, it probably is not necessary for you to upgrade to v. 3.5.1. However, if you prefer to use a larger default font size in the IDE and you have problems with text not displaying properly, you may find this version to be an improvement.

J2ME MIDP Development Available in NetBeans 3.5

With the elimination of Sun ONE Studio Community Edition, Sun Microsystems has made more modules available to the NetBeans community.

These include: Sun ONE Studio 4 update 1, Community Edition features (such as J2SE and Web Application development capabilities), together with the Mobile Edition features (such as J2ME MIDP development).

The following modules are now available from the "Free Third-Party Modules" folder on the NetBeans 3.5 and NetBeans 3.5.1 Stable Auto Update center:

- J2ME Wireless

- JODE Integration

- RetroGaurd Integration

- J2MEWTK 1.0.4_01

Upcoming Event: SunNetwork

The SunNetwork Conference will be taking place September 16-18, 2003 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

This event is the only conference that is 100% dedicated to showcasing end-to-end solutions from Sun and their partners. The Partner Pavilion will highlight innovations from Sun and over 100 partners.

Here you will have the chance to meet yet again, the NetBeans personalities. If you plan on attending the conference be sure to stop by and spend some time giving us your first hand feedback on the new NetBeans IDE and we will be prepared to answer any questions you may have. See you there!

Due to the latest release of NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Japanese Edition & the upcoming Chinese Edition, we will be a adding local language mailing list for each language respectively.

The nbmarketing team is looking volunteers to actively participate on the mailing lists and to help it become successful by attracting and retaining new members. If you are interested in the mailing lists or would like to translate Sprout in either Japanese or Chinese for these users, please send us an email at [email protected] .

Module Catalogue

In July the following modules have been made available both on Auto Update in the IDE and through the NetBeans module catalogue under the J2ME category .

J2ME Wireless - The J2ME Wireless module helps you write programs that use J2ME MIDP profile. It includes a MIDP wizard and MIDP templates, either of which can generate most of the code needed for MIDP programs. It also includes an emulator integration which allows you to test the developed application and compilation which handles all complexity of pre-verification.

J2MEWTK 1.0.4 - J2ME Wireless ToolKit for Linux, Windows and Solaris.

JODE Integration - This module allows user to optimize MIDP applications using JODE optimizer. The optimizer binary itself must be downloaded separately.

RetroGuard Integration - This module allows user to obfuscate MIDP applications using RetroGuard obfuscator.

Sun and Open Source , Charles Ditzel - "I bring these topics up because I have run into people that thought Sun was unsupportive of both Linux and open source. It turns out that Sun is probably the biggest open source contributor. It has also furthered Linux by shipping servers based on it and by providing an open source Java IDE and productivity suite that works well with Linux."
