Sprout, Issue 15 (October 2003)

The 6th China Java Convention is only a few days away. A NetBeans demo has been prepared for the conference and will be made available on NetBeans.org. The NetBeans demo will show how the NetBeans IDE is a full featured IDE that supports all aspects of Java development of desktop, web and mobile applications. Stay tuned for the URL.

On the topic of conferences take a look at comments from SNC 2003. Read some blogs including an entry by Vaughn Spurlin.

So how many downloads of the NetBeans IDE have taken place on NetBeans.org? Get the latest figures.

In the month of September two more businesses joined forces with the NetBeans partner program extending the already impressive list: Bright Software and Cincom Systems Inc. Do you wish to become a partner? Find out how.

In the press last month NetBeans announced the availability of the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Multi-Lingual release co-bundled with J2SE 1.4.2.

There were some additions to the NetBeans module catalogue pushing the total number of modules available in excess of one-hundred!

The NetBeans merchandise shop is a success. Take a look at http://www.cafeshops.com/netbeans if you are in search of NB gear. Have a photo taken with your gear and send it to us for the November issue of Sprout.

I would like to remind you that at Sprout we wish to fulfill your literary desires concerning NetBeans, so if you have any suggestions give us a Shout at Sprout !

NetBeans: The Open Source Java IDE

Are you curious as to how many downloads of the NetBeans IDE have taken place since the inception of NetBeans.org, the open source project? As of October 8th 2003, there have been over 1 million downloads of the NetBeans IDE, final release versions from www.netbeans.org!

The 1 million plus downloads from NetBeans.org is in addition to the 800,000 plus downloads of the J2SE and NetBeans IDE co-bundle! These numbers do not reflect the thousands of CD's that have been given away at trade shows or the inclusion of the NetBeans IDE onto other CD distributions.

To the people who were pioneers of the NetBeans IDE and the NetBeans.org project we salute you. To the new community members contributing to the project and the IDE, we thank you. Keep up the fantastic work and keep using NetBeans!

Translating Website Content

If you're interested in translating the NetBeans IDE or website content into your native language, jump aboard!

Translating Website Content

Getting important web content translated into different languages is a high priority for the project. Obviously translating - and maintaining - the whole website is a huge and unrealistic task, so we are preparing a short list of "essential" website docs. We consider these docs essential reading for any new visitor to the site, who perhaps doesn't yet know what NetBeans or NetBeans.org is. These few docs should be the first things translated into any new language, to make sure the minimum essential info is available to every newcomer, regardless of what language(s) they speak. We are taking suggestions at [email protected].

Website docs to translate, in order of priority:

- Welcome to NetBeans template : this page is a first introduction to NetBeans, and should serve as the NetBeans.org home page for each language;

- To be determined by [email protected]

Translating the NetBeans IDE

Join the community driven effort to translate the IDE into your native language. The translatedfiles project is where it all happens. To get started :

- Check out the docs and HOW-TOs on the translatedfiles website, get a feel for what's involved and what's required;

- Subscribe to the users@translatedfiles mailing list and post an introductory message stating what language you'd like to help with. There may be other users already working on localisation into that language, so use the list to co-ordinate your efforts.

Projects are currently underway in Chinese, French, Japanese and Russian.

In The Press

Availability of NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 (ML) Co-Bundle With J2SE 1.4.2 - NetBeans.org, the Open Source Java IDE and platform project announced the immediate availability of a popular co-bundle. Included are the latest release of NetBeans - NetBeans IDE 3.5.1, along with Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition, 1.4.2 , available for download from the Java Software web site . The co-bundle contains versions of the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1, in English, Chinese and Japanese.

In-House Innovation - Grant Nodine, senior director of Web operations for the NHL, says the decision to use open-source tools such as the NetBeans development environment and Cayenne data-modeling framework was only partly a cost-saving move. "I personally have found the open-source tools tend to be better documented and more up-to-date than their commercial counterparts," Nodine says.

The final version 5.1 of KELP has been released . The Kelp project (IDE plugins for Enhydra development) is focused on creating tools that make it easy to get the most out of other Enhydra projects such as XMLC and DODS. Kelp includes command line tools, application wizards and IDE add-ins. Kelp currently supports Netbeans 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5 on Windows and Linux. This version can be downloaded here .
