With rererence to this previous paragraph, I don't know if this helps 
but I am a CS student going into 3rd year at Newcastle, UK this year. I 
started out using BlueJ, with some but little previous Java experience, 
on the start of my course. Over the past year I have moved over to 
Netbeans and think it is so much better, especially debugging and GUI 
generation. However, my point is that I do not think I would have been 
happy with it at the start of my studies.

So to sum-up. The BlueJ and then Netbeans root you sudgest was great for 
me and is something I would highly recommed to anyone on a CS course.
