Re: [nbdev] Message from the NetBeans Team - Why NetBeans 6.7?

NOTE: This is a continuation of a thread which started on nbdev, but
moved to the nbdiscuss list where it's more appropriate.

First, I will begin by saying that I do not work for Sun Microsystems.
 I am a member of the DreamTeam and am serving my second term on the
NetBeans Governance Board.  This does give me some insight into both
the NetBeans community and Sun, the project's biggest sponsor.

I do know from conversations I've had with management at Sun that they
are still strongly committed to developer tools and NetBeans will
continue to be a core part of their strategy just as before.

This difficult economy has forced many companies, including Sun, to
reduce their workforce.  These cuts were made throughout the company,
so NetBeans was affected along with many other projects.   Naturally
this means that there will be fewer developers to do the work and so
it's necessary to become more efficient.  That's what having smaller
releases more frequently should help to do, plus it helps reduce the
feedback cycle so that users suggestions are incorporated into the
final product more quickly.

I think that there will be more of a focus on improving what's already
there instead of adding as many huge new features (such as first-class
support for new languages) with each new release.  Of course, NetBeans
is open source and dedicated people outside of Sun will keep adding
these things for everyone's benefit just as they did for Python, Scala
and other languages.

Anyway, that's my take on it.
