/tmp/cvs-serv???? after update

Hi,

I do periodical updates. When I use a local CVSROOT (like /home/cvs) 
cvs-serv???? files remain in the /tmp directory. When I do access cvs over 
":pserver" no such files seem to exist.

What is the reason?

Where can I find the current stable version?
