writing collection of refobjects through xmiwriter

Hello,

The XMIWriter has a write method that writes a collection of RefObjects to
disk. Is is implemented by setting the XMIWriter in collectionWriting mode
and at certain places this mode is quered to decide what to do. Now, I see
in the code that the writeAssociations() method is called when the XMIWriter
is in collectionWriting mode. 

Why are associations (for which no references are defined) also written in
this mode?
