Thanks Ortega for your reply.

I managed to implement what I needed manually using a javax.swing.filechooser.FileFilter. The test I wrote to determine if the mime type is the correct one is independent to the NetBeans platform. I also replaced the file icon using a javax.swing.filechooser.FileView.
