Split components in an undocked window

Maybe someone could point me where to begin in the default window manager to effect the change myself?  It seems like the logic is implemented in the main window, so it should be feasible to recreate the functionality in the undocked windows.  

At least I'd like to give it a go, and see how far I can get.  I'd take any sort of help getting a leg-up on the problem.
