I would suggest to start out with some of the numerous tutorials found on https://netbeans.org/kb/trails/platform.html  - for me it was (an earlier version) of the POV-ray Application example which got me going.

After going through those tutorials many many questions will be answered and you will overcome the initial learning curve for NetBeans based RCP development.
