4.0 changes

You may have noticed that a number of deprecated APIs
in openide have been removed. I'd like to upgrade our
code to be "clean" (this mostly involves getting rid
of TopManager). 

This does however mean that the code will diverge from
3.4; merging changes over from trunk to 3.4 will be harder.

Is the 3.4 branch important? Are people using it? Are
others willing to accept the increased effort in merging?

Or should we defer this work to later until close-to 4.0
release?
