Bigger icons - what are the UI reasons?

Hi,

does anyone know what are the UI reasons for having bigger icons? 
(Fortunately they can be switched quite easy to smaller size)

It's true, that some applications use this trend (MS IE, WinZip). 
Anyway, first thing I do anywhere, is to make them smaller (if it's 
possible).
