If you're using VCS support, you have to go to the versioning manager, 
select the working dir, click Edit > Properties > Create Backup Files :-/

I've never understood why creating backup files was on by default for 
VCS working dirs. The whole reason why you have version control is so 
that you don't have to do a bunch of local backups.
