Cool.  I did send Marek a zip of the book XML, so he's got it to play with.

I think the biggest argument against using anything DOM-like in this 
kind of context is that it's going to assume a well formed, parsable 
document - and most of the time when an XML file is being edited, that's 
not what you have.
