I can imagine that new users might like to see their files in tabs.   
But I wish I could turn it off.

I'm trying NetBeans again (for Matisse) after a long run with Eclipse  
and find that the tabs are pretty useless.  Eclipse 3.2 has a nice  
feature where it moves the tabs you've used most recently to the  
visible area.  Otherwise, I find I use Open Class or alt-tab.
