All I could think of was to use in memory as the default..  Although really,
the in memory version is basically just the ultimate in Mock objects...

However, maybe the solution would be just to have a better error message..
The logic for loading defaults at the end simple throws a hard to interpret
error..  The logic should, if nothing is found, then throw an exception that
tells the user what they did wrong..
