Another thing I had to do for JBoss 3.2.X was chage the configuration to the
login module

The readme I think is for an older version of JBoss. I needed something like
this in login-config.xml

    <application-policy name = "osuser">
       <authentication>
          <login-module code =
"com.opensymphony.user.provider.jboss.OSUserLoginModule"
             flag = "required">
          </login-module>
       </authentication>
    </application-policy>
