I think that we will have to agree to disagree.  Both of us have mentioned alternatives to the problem you have mentioned.  I am sorry if they are not appealing to you.  But I will not advocate exposing the concept of persistence up through all the layers.  Persistence is implmented as an event listener and that's how I think it should stay.  This issue can always be reopened, if things change or somebody points out how big an idiot I am.
