How do you catch exceptions in an Ajax a-tag call to an action

I have an ajax a tag that I have calling an action.  I want to be able to tell if the action went successful upon return and decide how to trigger my afterloading method.  Is there a way to get feeback from the action and let the a tag know if the action it triggered was successful?
