Can someone explain how the Velocity To Freemarker tag rendering works?

I recently just started to use the webwork ui macros.  I've been using Velocity for a long time.
I know that Freemarker is used to parse/render the macros, but I can't figure out how and 
where the conversion is done.

So in my velocity template I might have #wwtextfield, #ww<whatever> .  Can someone shed some light on how this works?
   1. where are those #ww macros defined on the velocity side?
   2. I'm using VelocityResult.java where the Velocity stufff is rendered.  Is the FreemarkerResult
       used somewhere as well ?  If so, when/how is this done?

For my next project, I'll try to use just Freemarker, but I still would like to know how this tie between Freemarker and Velocity works.
