I am going to make an assumption here that you downloaded the Flash MX 2004 
Remoting Components Actionscript 2.0. 

[if my assumption is incorrect, please read no further]

If that is the case, then you have to move your components onto the stage 
for Flash to compile. To locate the actual components, go to Window > Other 
Panels > Common Libraries > Remoting and drag those little mothers to the 
stage. Then your file should compile.

Another (better) way to use the Flash MX 2004 Remoting Components 
Actionscript 2.0 is to download the source (
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashremoting/downloads/components/ then 
scroll down to the label "Source Code for Macromedia Flash Remoting for 
Flash MX 2004 ActionScript 2.0" ) and then follow these instructions (
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flash_remoting/mx2004/readme_source.html
).

With these files in place, you can compile without placing anything on your 
stage *AND* review the source files to understand what is going on!
