Hi Sam,

A Flash based multiplayer game with a J2EE back end?  Sounds cool.

I'm not sure I understand why you feel that Servlet Services are
required for MVC, we are using MVC here at my company and the only
servlet in the system is the gateway.

Attached is a diagram that I have created for an upcoming presentation
on Flash/Flex to Spring and Hibernate.  It goes over our basic
architecture.  I believe that there is room for improvement but this
architecture is MVC and does work.
